About Cai

Finding answers in the data

I'm Cai (pronounced Ky), the data scientist and consultant behind Cai Consulting. I work with researchers, businesses and organisations to help them make better use of their data, producing high-quality research, meaningful insights and findings they can put to use.

Every project begins with a question. My role is to understand what needs answering, assess the data available and determine the most appropriate approach.

What I enjoy most about my work

“My favorite thing is answering a question with data, whether that requires software, data cleaning, modelling, generation of figures and reports, etc. and communicating my interpretation of the findings to how it best answers their question.”

Where it began

My interest in data science began during my undergraduate research, when I first applied data science theories to extract water concentrations from the spectra of rocks on Mars.

Turning a large, complex set of numbers into meaningful insights about the potential for life on Mars sparked a passion for the process. From wrangling data to polishing figures that communicate findings clearly, I find every stage rewarding, with each step revealing new ways to understand the data.

Reliable data science requires a deep understanding of the methods available and careful consideration of the context in which they're applied. Every project brings its own constraints and challenges, so experience and versatility are essential in determining what works best, when and why.

With expertise in two disciplines, graduate training in reproducible coding and methodology, and research experience across academia, industry and institutions, I've developed the knowledge to approach different problems with confidence.

I look forward to each new project as an opportunity to build on that experience, explore new questions and uncover meaningful findings.
